Agreeing garage work: a clear quote and authorisation checklist

Make the boundary between inspection, diagnosis and repair clear before your vehicle is worked on.

Contact Westfield Garage to confirm current availability and arrangements.

Describe the request in plain language

Begin with the task you want completed and what you have observed. A request to investigate a noise is different from an instruction to replace a named component. If another person suggested a cause, describe it as a suggestion rather than a confirmed diagnosis. Include the registration, approximate mileage and any time constraint, then let the garage explain what assessment would be appropriate.

Ask what the quoted amount covers

Check whether the figure covers investigation only or a specified repair. Ask about labour, parts, relevant taxes and any other expected charge. For replacement parts, ask what specification is proposed and what warranty information will be supplied. A very brief message such as “brakes, £X” leaves several questions unanswered; an itemised description is easier for both sides to refer to later.

Set an authorisation point

Agree how the garage should contact you if additional work is found. Explain whether you need a written quotation before further work and provide a number you can answer. Ask what happens if a part is unavailable or an inspection reveals a different issue. Avoid treating an initial estimate as a promise that every possible fault will be fixed for the same amount; equally, do not leave the scope open-ended by accident.

Check the handover record

Before collection, ask what was completed, whether anything remains outstanding and what documentation comes with the job. Read the invoice while the work is still fresh in your mind and query unclear wording. Keep the record with your service history. Contact Westfield directly to confirm its current booking, quotation and payment arrangements; this general checklist does not invent a business guarantee, cancellation policy or service price.
